Gregory Ferris

Vice-Principal, Learning Support Teacher

Key Roles

My name is Gregory Ferris and I am an enthusiastic educational leader with a passionate committment to the students overall development and the learning experience.

I have been at Horizon School for the last two and half years and have occupied many different roles: STAR 2 Teacher, Behavior Interventionist, Learning Support Teacher, STEP Teacher, and now as the Vice-Principal. I will also continue as the Learning Support Teacher where I support students, teachers and educational assistances with Alberta Education curriculum and life skills programming; the implementation of various Assistive Technology (AT) tools; the development of Behaviour Support Plans, and help create, implement and train staff and students on various Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems (e.g. Proloquo2Go, PODD, TouchChat, PECS, etc.). This year I will also be teaching online courses at Red Deer College in the Educational Assistant Certification program. Prior to joining the Horizon team, I worked for the Fort Vermilion School Division for 5 years as a high school English and Social Studies teacher, Inclusive Education Coordinator, Knowledge and Employability teacher and Diverse Learning Coach. I have taught in multi-dimensional classrooms, teaching a variety of academic, non-academic and vocational programs. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and History, a Bachelor of Education degree with a focus in secondary education and teaching students with exceptionalities, and a Masters in Educational Leadership with a research focus in Response to Intervention (RtI).

I am originally from Mill Cove, New Brunswick but have called Alberta my home since 2010. I currently live in Airdrie and am the proud parent of Tucker, a Catahoula Leopard (yes, a dog). When I am not working I enjoy relaxing at home, watching TV, shopping, taking Tucker for a walk, checking out coffee shops and new restaurants, and hanging with friends.

Please don't hesitate to contact me at or by calling the school at (403) 556 - 6310 if you have any questions. My door is always open!
