September 30 is designated as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation each year.
This day honors the children who were never able to go back home and the survivors of residential schools, together with their communities and families. A crucial part of the reconciliation process is the public remembering of the painful past and ongoing impacts of residential schools.
Orange Shirt Day is a memorial event organized with the goals of promoting the idea that "Every Child Matters" and increasing awareness of the intergenerational effects that residential schools have on individuals, families, and communities. The orange shirt represents the generations-long deprivation of Indigenous children's culture, independence, and self-worth.
Our school will recognize this day on Tuesday Oct 2, 2024 as Sep 30, 2024 is not a school day.
